Let Them Eat (Something Other Than) Cake! Creative Desserts Customize Your Wedding Reception

You could be a non-traditionalist. Or you’re just not into frosting. Or maybe, as Alice Drennan of Peach State Baking has learned, your love story may include cookies as a major supporting character.

Whatever the reason, brides and grooms should feel no guilt about going for a different dessert when it’s time to make catering selections.

“More and more, couples are showcasing their personality through their culinary choices,” noted Drennan. “Many clients have a history with cookies, either baking together, or enjoying them at a special time in their relationship. They want to create a sensory memory of their wedding day, and for them, the flavor, smell, and texture of a cookie will solidify that moment in time.”

Alternative Desserts Make an Impression

Towers of cookies, doughnuts, candy, or macarons can take center stage at a reception and create a unique conversation piece. But you can have the best of both worlds! Couples can still include a cake for the traditional cutting photos, but also add a different dessert for a sweet alternative. If you do, you won’t be alone! According to The Knot’s 2020 Real Weddings Study, 53% of couples surveyed arranged for an alternative wedding dessert in addition to cake.

But don’t think that dessert can only be served and eaten at reception tables. Here’s where you can get truly creative with those additional treats. While cake requires a plate and fork, and a place to set them down between bites, handhelds like cake pops, ice cream cones, cookies are portable and fully edible while guests are socializing, walking, and even dancing.

For example, Peach State Baking has been asked to make their popular Bonfire (hot cocoa and burnt marshmallow), Build Me Up Buttercup (peanut butter and hazelnut with chocolate ganache), and OG chocolate chip cookies as late-night dance floor treats, They’re served with a shooter of ice-cold milk, of course.

Drennan notes that edible favors are a popular way to send guests home with a sweet finish, or welcome them to the wedding weekend at the rehearsal dinner, or even before.

“We’ve even been asked to supply cookies for out-of-towner hospitality baskets because our Georgia Grown ingredients offer a true taste of the state,” noted Drennan.

With numerous options, no couple should feel stuck with a wedding cake when their inner cookie monsters want to be let out!
